As we approach mid-summer, we wanted to share some fun ways to spruce up your environment and balance the energies with these simple ways to feng shui your home.

  1. Organize, Declutter and Clean.
We’ve all heard the Marie Kondo Way – if it does not bring you joy – toss it.
Clutter causes congestion in any room. Start in one room and organize, declutter and clean each living space. We recommend starting in the kitchen as that is where most of the gathering, communicating, and family time is spent. By clearing away excess clutter you are creating breathing space, organization and room for energy to flow.

Focus on your window space as well. Windows in the kitchen, dining room, living room, bedrooms as they symbolize your eyes to the world and allow light and energy into your home. Open your windows from time to time to create a fresh room filled with oxygen.

  2. Feng Shui the Front Door. The front door is the gatekeeper to your home sanctuary. Your primary flow of energy or chi is through the main door so it’s important to have a strong entrance. Make sure that it is well maintained and unobstructed. You don’t want to have squeaky hinges, chipped paint, dust bunnies or damages. Create space that allows energy to flow in and out by removing any clutter, old mats, tattered shoe racks or dead plants

  3. A Friendly Foyer. Whether you have a large or small space, the energy you create with this entry way is what will “wow” guests immediately. How do you want people to feel when they enter into your space? Clean, crisp and organized? Comfortable, cozy and relaxed? Bright colors, with design and flowers? Set the energy of your home by targeting the front foyer with the flow of chi that you choose to portray as you welcome friends and guests. Fresh cut flowers in a vase will offer a feeling of comfort when you feng shui your home.

  4. Create a comfy living room. This central space should be inviting for friends, family and guests alike. Avoid having furniture in the middle of the room and place your couch along a solid wall. An electric fireplace is a great accent for bringing in the elements (even a faux fire place). You can increase the energy by adding plants, flowers, and wood décor throughout the room.

  5. Build Boundaries in the Bedroom. Remove televisions, computers or exercise equipment as these add the energy of work and stress. The bedroom should be a place for relaxation and sleep. Decorate with items that bring you peace and relaxation. Having enough space for a bedside table on each side is important as well as avoiding having your bed in line with the door. You want energy to enter and circulate the room, not sit stagnant and stuffy.

  6. Close the Bathroom Door. Water is the element of wealth in feng shui and a lot of water escapes the home through toilets, sinks and showers. Small habits like putting the toilet seat down and closing the bathroom door will keep the positive energy that is already flowing through your bathroom in.

  7. Bloom in the Kitchen. The kitchen is considered the heart of the home, so it’s important to keep the pulse beating vibrantly. You can do this simply by adding fresh fruit, flowers or plants which bring uplifting life and energy. Add some fresh herb plants which add positive energy and great for adding to your kitchen creatives while cooking!

1. Replace the heavy draperies and linens with window coverings made of lighter, airier fabrics. Cellular blinds are very popular right now which allow the light in but keep the heat out. Have fun lightening and brightening. If you haven't already, swap out your flannel sheets for lighter sheets and comforters to help you stay cool and comfortable during those hot summer nights.

2. Potted flowers and plants will help to keep the humidity inside your home lower and help to improve your mood. If you suffer from allergies, decorating with artificial silk plants are life like, affordable and spirit lifting.

3. Nothing says summer quite like the beach! Add throw pillows, bed linens, area rugs or draperies ins shades of blue, white, turquoise, and beige to give your space a beachy vibe. Consult Pinterest for inspiration on additional beach themed decorations

4. If you're not a beach theme person, you can lighten and brighten with bright summer colors. Choose pillows and other accessories in vibrant reds, oranges, yellows, blues, and greens. Keep in mind that too many bold colors in one room can be overwhelming - limit your selection to one or two summer colors that complement your usual decor. Check out #dopamineddress or #dopaminedecor for additional inspiration.

5. Add in a few summer scenes or seascapes and swap them with your usual art pieces. Add a few personal touches with family beach candid’s or vacations - adding a little personality to your home will complement your summer theme.

6. Do a balcony check. This bonus space offers the perfect place to extend your summer decorating theme. Add in a summer bistro set or luxurious lounge chair to turn your balcony into an inviting place to spend an evening or weekend afternoon. An outdoor rug and a few colorful, water-resistant throw pillows and cushions will help to tie your decorating theme together. Have fun and let us know your summer themes!

You’ve decided to find a new home.  You’ve searched and found the apartment that checks all of the boxes.  It meets your needs and budget!  Now what?  It’s time to make that “I’m a great tenant” impression.  Here are a few simple tips to get those keys to your new home.

Step One:  Fill out the Rental Application on our website, making sure that all fields are filled out.  If you must leave one empty, add a comment below to explain why.  Applications that do not include vital information such as past landlords and current employers can be easily outshined by other applicants.  We understand that not all prospective tenants fit perfectly in these categories and adding additional references in the comment section will ensure that we do not miss a great tenant.  All references are contacted on your application, so it is important to provide the most recent information.

Step Two:  Contact our leasing agent, Sean, and let him know what you are looking for.  Sean can assist you in finding that perfect location within your budget.  Be prepared to ask questions that may hinder your commitment to rent such as lease requirements.  All leases are year to year, and this may not fit with your plans.  Do not forget to ask about utilities, parking spaces, and other details that may sway your decision.

Step Three:   You have crunched the numbers and you know you can afford the rent.  An easy rule of thumb for your budget is that rent should not be more than a third of your income.  Having your bank statements and credit score ready to send can fast-track you to the top of the list.  Equifax is a free, quick, and easy way to check your credit score online.  Quickly providing a good credit score will surely impress.  If you are a first-time renter, don’t panic! You just need a co-signer (a parent or relative) to fill out an application and go through the rental process.  Just think of them as an additional referral for your application.  If you are unemployed or have a low credit score, a co-signer can improve your chances of approval.

Step Four:   A security deposit equal to one month's rent is needed to hold your apartment before lease signing.  This will be held by Service NB for the duration of your lease. Having these funds in hand and sending them promptly will officially close the deal.

Good luck with your search and we look forward to welcoming you into your new home!

The sunshine and warm temperatures are turning our thoughts to gardening here at State Street. It may seem a bit overwhelming to attempt to have a container garden in your limited space. We have rounded up a few tips and tricks, whether it be a container on your balcony or a pot on your window sill, you'll be surprised at how rewarding it can be to grow flowers, herbs, or veggies.

Sunlight – You will need to check your apartment for sunlight. If you’re planting indoors, you will typically get partial sunlight. However, if you’re planting outside on a balcony or patio, you may get more. Here’s a cheat sheet for tracking the amount of sunlight your apartment gets:

You’ll want to compliment the sunlight with what you would like to plant. After that, you can figure out how to set up your garden to get the most out of the type of natural light that your plant needs.

With oodles of types of plants to choose from, here are a few ideas:

Herbs – Try growing a variety of herbs like basil, mint, cilantro, and many more. Most herbs need about 6 hours of sun to thrive, which means you’ll need to find a space in your apartment that receives a lot of light or place them outside on a balcony. Herbs do best at around 65 F without cold drafts, which can kill the plant.

Veggies – There is a huge variety of vegetables that you can grow indoors. Carrots, garlic, micro greens like sprouts, and lettuce are all very easy for indoor gardeners. Each has its own needs when it comes to light and watering, so it’s best to decide what you want to grow and then set up individual pots for each type of veggie.

Indoor plants – If you’re new to gardening, your best bet is to go to a local nursery, choose plants you’re interested in growing, then ask specifically how much water and sun it needs. Each type of plant is different and if you don’t naturally have a green thumb, this extra step will save your plants! Getting specific instructions helps keep your plant alive and thriving.

Flowers – Although flowers are usually saved for outdoor gardens, some flowers can thrive indoors like African Violets, Peace Lilies, and Jasmine. Most flowers need heavy sunlight and moist soil.

Feel free to send us your garden photos, we love when tenants share how they are making themselves a home!
